Panda Dog

How to make a Panda Dog

Contrary to popular belief, the Panda Dog is not a new breed. Owners of white poodles and other white furred breeds have created the designer Panda Dog by dyeing their pet’s fur. The typical cute black eyed shape of the Panda is recreated through individual dyeing and styling.

How to make a Panda Dog

The photos of cute fluffy Panda Dogs you see on the internet are actually a Maltese Poodle cross. They do not come black and white, they are just white.

If you have a white furred dog such as a Poodle or Maltese, you can follow these steps to dye your dog’s fur to make it look like a Panda:

  • Buy some puppy safe hair dye from the pet shop. Try to get a CTFA (Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association) approved dye. The gel is easier than liquid dyes. Generally, your pet must be at least 12 weeks old. The semi-permanent hair dye last 4 to 6 washes and costs around $20. You can buy all sorts of colors including Brown, Gold, Green, Pink, Turquise, Red, Purple and Yellow. Of course, to get the traditional Panda look, you’ll want to choose black.
  • Follow the product instructions
  • Generally you will need to wash the dog the day before
  • Use rubber gloves to apply
  • Coat the perimeter of the areas to be coloured with Vaseline to make sure they don’t get dyed.
  • Then gently spread the dye contents in the areas you would like coloured. This will usually be large ovals around the eyes, the ears, the front legs merging with a strip along its back and lastly the hind and the hind legs. Take a look at some pictures before marking the spots.
  • Make sure to avoid the animals’ eyes and mouth.
  • Leave the colouring on your pet for the recommended time
  • You need to keep your dog from licking the dye. Here are some tips:
    • Use a veterinary cone
    • Keep your dog on a leash
    • Take it for a walk
    • Keep a vigilant eye out and stop any licking
  • Rinse off the contents until the water runs clear

Woilla! You have gorgeous Panda Dog to play with and admire.
